Fundamentals of Industrial Hygiene

 This course teaches how to collect valid, representative samples to evaluate employee exposure to airborne chemicals and noise in the work environment. You will be shown how to interpret the results based on current exposure standards. This Bureau Veritas course has been previously awarded 4.5 ABIH CM points.

Recommended attendees

This course was designed for safety managers, plant managers, industrial hygienists, engineers, human resource managers, plant nurses, chemists and technicians who are responsible for collecting data relating to industrial hygiene exposures in the plant as well as those who may receive and interpret industrial hygiene reports.

  • Collect air samples for dusts, fumes, mists, gases and vapors

  • Apply occupational exposure limits (OEL), such as the ACGIH Threshold Limit Values (TLVs) and the OSHA standards (PELs), to the results of the sampling
  • Calibrate the flow rate through sample media
  • Develop a sampling strategy based on the severity of exposure
  • Recognize industrial hygiene hazards
  • Measure air flow in ventilation systems
  • Understand the selection, use, maintenance and fit testing of respirators
  • Measure air contaminants for confined space entry

This three-part course is designed to help attendees assess factors relating to workplace behaviors, learn how to implement a behavior observation system, and understand how to integrate a behavior management process within a comprehensive safety approach.

Because behavior management for safety processes are compatible with self-directed work teams or employee-empowered teams, members of such teams with responsibility for implementing workplace behavior efforts should attend.
